Aquamarine Living: A Weaving Exhibit by Doris Florig Convergence 2008 Tampa Bay June 25 – August 22, 2008 Coinciding with the Handweavers Guild of America's biennial conference in Tampa, Florida in late June 2008, Aquamarine Living: A Weaving Exhibit by Doris Florig, is a fiber art exhibit hosted by The Florida Aquarium and created by the artist aboard a 44 foot cruising sailboat in the tropics. Weave your way through the floor to ceiling translucent panels that give you the illusion you are swimming through a coral reef in the tropics. You will be surrounded by three dimensional handwoven sea animals, fish, shells, myriad colors and shapes of the coral reef. Then, visualize yourself walking on the beach while your senses are overwhelmed by the contrast of the tapestries of dark green, palm fringed beaches with powdery sand. The tapestries on the gallery walls give you a sense of the diversity and beauty of the Caribbean, its culture and a sense of the unreal quality of life at sea. The Handweavers Guild of America and the Florida Tropical Weavers Guild will bring over 2500 registered participants from over thirty countries to its Convergence conference at the Tampa Convention Center with an additional 3000 day visitors, and it traditionally showcases the work of hundreds of artists in over 70 local community exhibits. The Florida Aquarium is proud to host Doris Florig's unique exhibit.
